The Importance of Healthy Gut Microbiome

The microbiome is referred as the combined microbial organisms (i.e. bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa), genetic materials and essential metabolites occupying a defined habitat such as the human gut and the gut of a companion animal.

The microbiome is an ever-changing ecosystem and is influenced by various factors such as diet, medication (especially antibiotics), age, genetics, and environment.

In both human and animal microbiome, the highest concentration of microbes is located in the gut, along with 70%-80% of the immune system. The gut microbiome of each person, cat, dog, bird, rabbit, or hamster is very unique.

The gut microbiome supports the core health, digestive and immune health, as well as function of other organs, such as the kidney, liver, pancreas and skin!

The gut microbiome also facilitate the host’s nutrient digestion and absorption as well as the production of postbiotics which are bioactive compounds produced by probiotics during fermentation.

The role of the gut microbiome in both health and diseases is an increasingly compelling field of study for researchers and area of clinical interest in human health and companion animal health.

A healthy gut microbiome is therefore fundamentally important to overall health, right from the time a baby is conceived till old age. It is also increasingly recognized as a metabolically active organ inextricably linked to overall health.

On the other hand, disruptions in microbiome composition (dysbiosis) have been associated with various diseases such as obesity, diabetes, cancer, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), chronic kidney disease (CKD), atopic dermatitis, etc.

This is where the supplementation of probiotics, prebiotics, and especially postbiotics becomes very important in having a healthy microbiome.

Probiotics

Proprietary straisn on live beneficial bacteria, specially studied, selected and cultured to exert maximum gut health and immune health benefits.

Prebiotics

Dietary fibres that help good bacteria grow in the gut. Prebiotics are essentially food for hte probiotics.

Miiiome™ Postbiotics

The functional bioactive compounds, generated by proprietary probiotic strains during microbial fermentation, that are highly essential for a healthy gut microbiome.

Probiotics, Prebiotics, and Postbiotics

Probiotics, defined by the FAO/WHO as “live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host.” The live bacteria from the genus Lactobacillus have been one of the most popular group of friendly bacteria in the commercial products.

Prebiotics are special dietary fibre that feed the “friendly” bacteria in the gut to produce nutrients (i.e. postbiotics as source of energy) for colon cells, which leads to a healthier digestive system. Garlic, onions, whole grains, bananas, soybeans and artichokes are some examples prebiotic food available.

Postbiotics are the beneficial and bioactive compounds such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) like acetate, butyrate, propionate, and other bacterial metabolites produced by probiotics during fermentation. On their own and without the need of probiotics or live bacteria, postbiotics are able to render gut health benefits.

SCFA, for instance, are important source of energy for the cells of the digestive tract. They are help preserve integrity of intestinal barrier, a crucial aspect in remedying digestive disorders including inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD).

Studies on postbiotics in, among others, diabetes control, metabolic diseases, cancer growth prevention, modulating immune function, are becoming hot area of scientific research.

Probiotics, Prebiotics, and Postbiotics, each one of them as well as collectively are highly beneficial to the health of gut microbiome.

Recognising the improtance, advanced Microbiome formula containing probiotics, postbiotics, and prebiotics are made available in the form of Biomiii Probiotics (for human health), and FURMENT Complete (for pet health).

Miiiome Technology

Both Biomiii Probiotics and FURMENT range of postbiotics are formulated by Miiiome™ Technology who capitalises on the latest frontier of science, the Microbiome.

Through Miiiome Technology, the gut microbiome was studied, characterised and dissected using DNA, molecular and microbiological techniques to select the array of beneficial microbes (probiotics) that will greatly enhance the health and vitality of human and companion animals.

These proprietary strains of beneficial microbes (probiotics) were cultured and the good metabolites were enhanced and concentrated into postbiotics, which is defined as the functional bioactive compounds generated during biofermentation.

The results of its research and studies have shown that human and pets at all stages of growth and medical conditions benefitted from the range of Miiiome Probiotics and Miiiome Postbiotics, showing improved health and enhanced immunity.
